Reading

Math

As we start the year off students will be learning strategies to help them become better readers. We will be learning about author's purpose as well as looking into the structure of the text.

The standards for the first 20 days focuses on fiction text and story structure. We will be reading many stories and will work on developing the skill of summarizing.

In math class we will start the year learning to use many different strategies so that students can become more fluent in addition and subtraction. Some of these strategies include doubles, ten friends, doubles plus one, and using addition to help with subtraction. We will also work on using these strategies to solve word problems.

Writing

Our writing goals this year will focus on narratives, opinion pieces and research projects. Our first narrative, "How I spent my summer vacation" , will be displayed at open house on October 1st.

As we move into our insect unit we will work closely with Mrs. Ward on an insect research project.

 Science

Our first science kit will bring some crawly creatures into the room as we study the life cycle of insects! This is always a very popular topic. Students will be working with mealworms, caterpillars, and milkweed bugs to learn about complete and incomplete metamorphosis.
